Prison, a whole other world It's hard for someone on the outside to really understand the completely different world that exists inside a prison facility.
I've read that prison is an exact reflection of society but on a smaller scale, meaning there are good and bad, right and wrong and so on.
But it's really it's own entity. The rules are completely different, and it isn't always in the way we think.
I don't think that many people would actually suggest that they are an environment designed to rehabilitate. They are ridiculously over crowded. And from what I have observed, the inmates are running the place. Some of it is just like on TV or the movies, and some is completely different, I wish the public had more opportunity to see what it's like behind the walls, perhaps it would add some steam to the abolishment movement. (here's an essay http://uppingtheanti.org/node/2785)
I guess it isn't for everyone, but I would rather have my loved one home under 24 house arrest with me footing every bill, then locked up in a place where they have to fight for survival. I know it could be worse but I also know it could be better.
Our current prison system is about retribution, not rehabilitation or preventing reoffending, a majority of the time it makes things worse.
